Lake Havasu

The lake itself is Lake Havasu’s most popular attraction. The water is cool and deep and the shores are lined with beaches and scenic inlets. Free fishing access is available, and the lake has been known to hold striped bass, large-mouth bass, sunfish, bluegill, catfish and more. Water skiing, jet skiing, boating and sailing are also quite popular. Several businesses rent boats and other equipment, including jet skies. The lake is also a venue for many organized events, boat regattas, amateur and pro-fishing contests, golf tournaments, various competitions and music festivals.

The undeveloped area just outside of the city provides more opportunity for recreational fun. The backcountry byway along Parker Dam Road is used for hiking, exploring, ATV’s, wildlife viewing and camping. The region includes portions of the Lake Havasu National Wildlife Refuge and the Bill Williams National Wildlife Refuge, situated just south of the lake. Both areas are wonderful places to explore the natural vegetation diverse geology and possibly spot a coyote, wild burro or bighorn sheep.

Lake Havasu was created when the Parker Dam was built in the 1930’s and founded by businessman Robert McCulloch. McCulloch was actually in need of a testing site for his company, which produced outboard motors, among other things. Drawn by the lake waters, McCulloch purchased a large parcel of lakeshore property. In its earliest stages, the city consisted of a mobile home park and two small hotels, but McCulloch Properties would later develop the city as its popularity grew. McCulloch made a substantial, high profile investment in the city several years later with the purchase of the London Bridge. The bridge had to be shipped by boat from London to Long Beach, California and then trucked to Arizona. It was then rebuilt over a section of the Colorado River to a small island. The rebuilding was completed in 1971. Next to the bridge, in homage to its long history in London, sits the English village, which is a cluster of Tudor-style buildings, restaurants, shops, and condos.
